Service: The Other Evangelism

Start with your own kin, but do it.

If all I accomplished by hiking around town with a sign was an acute awareness of human need, it was all the reason God needed for provoking me to do it. For now, the fire of that activity has dimmed a bit, but I'm keeping the sign. I'm also still making t-shirts with similar messages. I can't avoid wanting to tell people they need to repent.

But it helps if they have a visible model of what repentance means. I've long been inclined to offer my assistance in doing work other people find difficult for whatever reason. A few of my neighbors have figured this out, and will ask my help from time to time with things they can't do for themselves. There's one fellow with a muscle-wasting disease who asked me to stretch a steering wheel cover for him, and the lady who needed someone to chase down her dog. Yesterday I mowed some of the jungle in my mother-in-law's yard. This is not to earn their praise, but to demonstrate the power and presence of the Spirit. I'm trying to make sure they know my God.

I would dearly love to extend this ministry. Even better is to wear those t-shirts as a signature of why the work is being done. I've also been collecting tools I know how to use for such ministry. For example, I'm trying to find a push-mower -- the kind with a barrel-blade. I also need another swing blade. When God provides, I'll get those and other similar tools, because I know how to do yard work. I know how to do it for the sake of the Kingdom.

Love the Lord Your God, and love your neighbor as yourself. Your neighbor may be your worst enemy, but God ignores such silly divisions when He reveals His will.
